Mira100 was founded by water industry professionals with decades of field and laboratory experience. What we discovered along the way changed everything — and led us here.

Where It All Began

Our journey started in 2016, in regions of the world where water is not a given — where scarcity is a daily reality and access to clean water is a matter of survival. Working across these environments, we developed a deep, technical understanding of water systems, water quality, and the invisible forces that shape what comes out of your tap.

We are water professionals. Scientists, researchers, and field practitioners who have spent years analysing water samples, working alongside governments, and contributing to research that most people never see. This is not a passion project. This is the culmination of a career spent in the water industry — and a growing sense of urgency about what we were finding.

What the Data Was Telling Us

Over years of laboratory analysis, a pattern emerged that was impossible to ignore. Water quality was not static — it was deteriorating. Not dramatically, not overnight, but steadily and consistently. And the culprits were not the usual suspects.

A new class of threats had been quietly accumulating in our water systems. Scientists call them contaminants of emerging concern — substances that have existed for decades but are only now receiving the attention they deserve. These include:

Take Warragamba Dam — the primary water source for Greater Sydney. The organic load entering that catchment has increased significantly over time. These are natural organics from the surrounding landscape, but they are larger, more complex, and more difficult to treat than they were a generation ago. This is not a failure of infrastructure. It is a reflection of a world that has changed faster than our systems were designed to handle.

The Paradox of Progress

Here is the uncomfortable truth that sits at the heart of everything we do: the very advancements that have made our lives better are the same forces making our water worse.

PFAS was engineered to be extraordinary. It waterproofs, resists heat, suppresses fire, and endures almost anything. It is used in cookware, clothing, food packaging, firefighting foam, and hundreds of everyday products. The problem? It was designed never to break down — and it doesn't. Not in the environment. Not in the human body. It accumulates, silently, over a lifetime.

Microplastics have been found in drinking water, in fish, in human blood, and in breast milk. The material that was designed to last forever is now inside us.

💉 Pharmaceuticals in Water

Medications pass through the human body and enter wastewater systems. Many are not fully removed by conventional treatment. Trace levels of antibiotics, hormones, and antidepressants have been detected in water sources around the world — with consequences for ecosystems and human health that are still being studied.

The System Is Doing Its Best — But the World Has Changed

We want to be clear: the people working in water treatment, in government, in research — they are doing extraordinary work. The systems we have are the result of decades of investment, science, and public health commitment. We have enormous respect for that work, because we have been part of it.

But the world has changed faster than any infrastructure can adapt. We are in a transition moment — a period where the old frameworks are straining under the weight of new realities. Regulations take time. Research takes time. Infrastructure upgrades take time. And in the meantime, the water flowing into homes across Australia and around the world carries traces of things that were never anticipated when those systems were built.

This is not a crisis of negligence. It is a crisis of pace. And it requires a personal response while the systemic one catches up.

After years in the field and in the laboratory, we arrived at a simple but powerful conclusion: individual action matters. Not because governments and institutions cannot solve these problems — they can, and they will — but because the transition will take time, and people deserve the ability to protect themselves and their families right now.
